The Lyrids is an average meteor shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak.

The Eta Aquarids is an above average meteor shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak.

Park guests are invited to come out and take a hike for Earth Day.

Join us on Earth Day to assist park volunteers in revitalizing several of our park's flower beds. We will meet at the state park visitor center and begin work at 9 a.m. Tools, mulch, topsoil, and plants will be provided.

This program is all about learning how to identify wild animals by the tracks that they leave behind. Our park interpreter will guide you out onto the hiking trail in search of paw prints, hoof prints, claw markings, and any other evidence of animal traffic. After this we will return to the visitor center where you can create your very own mold of any animal track of your choice.  All materials will be provided by the park. Please dress for the weather and be prepared to hike at least half of a mile.

Welcome to Staunton River State Park where every Friday during the Summer we will gather around the campfire.

In our park's nature center, you can see many different native animals of Virginia. Join us on Saturday to observe these beautiful animals during their dinner time. From snakes to turtles to fish, you will be able to see all of these park animals devouring a meal. Park staff will provide information about the animals and will then show you what types of diets are best for them.

Archery programs are some of the best recreational activities that State Parks have to offer. The sport of archery can help a person develop strong problem-solving skills, increase focus and determination, learn goal setting, build confidence, and is a great way to connect with family and friends. This program is perfect for archers who are just starting out or those who just want to learn more about the sport.

Throughout the summer we offer multiple opportunities for you to take a tour of our beautiful park by wagon ride. Enjoy the scenic views of the Staunton and Dan Rivers. Witness some of the original work that the Civilian Conservation Corps did to build our beautiful park. Be sure to bring your camera to capture some fun memories or anything picture worthy.

Once the sun has slipped out of sight let the moon be your guide as we travel the trails looking and listening for the wildlife that can be found in our park.

Want to go on a scavenger hunt in the wilderness? Let’s go on a hike on the Captain Staunton Trail and try to find some of nature’s hidden treasures. All guests will be provided with a list of items to find while we are out on the trail. The first person to find them all will get a prize.

Let’s head over to Edmunds Lake and try to wrangle in some big fish. Our 25-acre lake offers some of the best fishing opportunities in the park, and is one of the most beautiful and natural areas in Scottsburg, VA.  A park ranger will escort everyone to the fishing location and will be available to show you how to tie some basic fisherman’s knots that will help you reel in the big one. Some fishing poles and worms will be provided, but feel free to bring your own rod and tackle.
