Nature and history programs
From Cumberland Gap to the Chesapeake Bay, state parks’ natural and cultural resources tell the story of Virginia and the broader American experience. Discover unique geologic formations, rare plants, fascinating animals, diverse forest and aquatic communities. Experience archeological sites, Colonial homes, Civil War battlefields, pioneer homesteads and more.

Virginia State Parks offer thousands of nature and history programs throughout the year. From guided walks and canoe trips to fossil hunts and living history demonstrations, there are exciting and informative programs to suit everyone. Programs and exhibits teach guests about those who shaped our culture and how our world works. They also:
- Reveal the deeper meaning of our resources.
- Impart new skills.
- Provide a chance to see Virginia through the eyes of those who shaped our land, culture and nation.
- Put people in touch with nature and hands-on history.
Parks also offer plenty of self-guided activities for those wanting to explore on their own – park packs, visitor center exhibits, interpretive trails and GPS hikes, to name a few.
