CREW MEMBER SUCCESS
We are committed to supporting Crew Members, enabling them to succeed in this program and beyond. Oftentimes, YCC is a first work experience for youth. Therefore, it is designed to help Crew Members develop skills that better prepare them for future plans, including, but not limited to, other employment opportunities, college applications, and leadership roles. A successful Crew Member will embrace the opportunity to demonstrate and grow in three main areas: teamwork and inclusivity, self-confidence and independence, and professionalism and work ethic.
Teamwork and Inclusivity:
Crew Members are expected to uphold teamwork and inclusivity as core values during their participation in YCC on and off the worksite. Crew Members will contribute to a harmonious living environment by managing themselves and their property, contributing to shared chores to maintain the living quarters, and participating to their fullest extent on the worksite each day.
Crew Members are expected to promote inclusivity with all fellow members, including those with different experiences and beliefs. It is unacceptable to exclude someone for personal differences in a professional setting such as YCC. Crew Members should expect to address issues with one another in a civil and appropriate manner. It is common for Crew Leaders to guide these conversations to ensure everyone shares their experience and that the involved parties work towards the common goal of crew cohesion.
Self-Confidence and Independence:
YCC is designed to instill self-confidence and independence in prospective and selected Crew Members. As such, all correspondence should come from the youth applicant. We encourage youth to CC their parent on communications, but, as with any employment opportunity, the applicant (youth) is responsible for their application and all subsequent correspondence. Crew Members will own completing their application, participating in a group interview (if selected), completing a background check, and completing their onboarding packet (with the help of a parent/guardian).
Once in the field, youth will be responsible for keeping up with their gear and assigned tools.
Crew Members will also be responsible for administering all their own medications, vitamins and supplements. Practicing at home before arriving to serve at a park is highly recommended.
Professionalism and Work Ethic:
Crew Members can expect to feel challenged during their participation in YCC. The bulk of the work is completed outdoors, which comes with challenges such as heat, rain, bugs, sun, and other obstacles the crew will be expected to overcome to complete the assigned work.
Crew Members will be formally evaluated by their supervisors on their performance in the program. One evaluation will take place halfway through the session, and another at the end of the session. The feedback will be provided in private discussions between the Crew Leaders and the Crew Member. Crew Members are expected to embrace the opportunity to learn and grow from the provided feedback.
