Another installment in this series where I actually name names! By that I mean I am sharing a specific cabin at a specific park. It was super helpful for me as a state park goer to know the specifics. I booked those cabins, just as I booked this one, I don't want you to miss out on these great cabins and insight from someone who has actually stayed in this water view cabin at Staunton River State Park.

Staunton River State Park was the park that was hit by a devastating tornado last April, so due to that some of the trails are not yet open and work is ongoing to clear away the damage, which was severe. All the rest of the park amenities are open and operating in season. 

We stayed in Cabin 6 which is a 2 bedroom cabin with a sleeper sofa. It has a wood burning fireplace and central a/c heat. It is a rustic cabin with wood walls and floor, an upgraded kitchen with microwave, stove and full size fridge. The two bedrooms have a queen sized bed and a shared bath inbetween.

Hint #1 Take a few moments to go to the park visitor center gift shop, you might find some fun things to enhance your play-time at this park, we found a kite and discovered the big grassy area outside the visitor center/pool area was perfect for kite flying!

Hint #2 Bring your bikes as the roads in the park are ideal for families to ride.

Hint #3 There is a small store a couple miles from this state park should you forget to bring milk or other ancillary items.

Hint #4 If you happen to go through South Boston VA, may I suggest Smokin' Jakes BBQ which has great BBQ and killer key lime pie! 

GENERAL INFO: The park was recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark. Many structures in the park, including the cabins, pool-house and picnic shelters, are little changed from when they were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. Tucked away in south central Virginia, the park lies between the Dan and Staunton Rivers at the threshold of Buggs Island Lake (also known as Kerr Reservoir). The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park’s many attractions, which include an Olympic size pool with a 70-foot waterslide, a smaller log slide and the Pollywog Pond, which is a water playground for children (there is a size limit on this pool). The shaded campgrounds, rustic cabins, picturesque picnic shelters, well-maintained nature trails, and plenty of exciting outdoor opportunities for the whole family make Staunton River State Park the perfect place for your vacation.

LOCATION: Staunton River State Park is 18 miles east of South Boston. Take U.S. 360 to Route 344. Follow Route 344 for 10 miles to the park, located southeast of Scottsburg, Va.
