My very first cabin stay at a Virginia State Park came about after seeing some photos that were posted on a blog by Nancy Heltman (just like this one). I knew exactly the cabin number and that I wanted to visit that park and stay in that cabin specifically. I thought this was a neat way to share a great place with others who have not been there, and has made me a fan of Virginia State Parks for life!  Too many blog articles share non-descript general references to the cabins and what I wanted was them to name names (with photos is even better!)

So I am here to share cabin #2 at Natural Tunnel State Park with you. The cabins at this park are newer housekeeping cabins, up on a bluff overlooking the mountains and valley far below. They are fully outfitted for your weekend or week long stay, with comfortable beds and linens, modern bathrooms and huge kitchens. The living room has a gas fireplace, the porch has rockers and there is a picnic table and fire pit as well as a barbeque grill for your use!

HINT: Natural Tunnel SP is a short drive to Big Stone Gap, make it a day trip and go visit Southwest Virginia Museum, Historical State Park, it is really interesting!

About Natural Tunnel State Park

The state acquired the tunnel and 100 surrounding acres in 1967 from the Natural Tunnel Chasm and Caverns Corp. to establish Natural Tunnel State Park. Another 850 acres were later acquired, and the park opened in 1971. 

Natural Tunnel, called the Eighth Wonder of the World by William Jennings Bryan, has been attracting sightseers to the mountains of southwestern Virginia for more than 100 years. Today it is the focal point of Natural Tunnel State Park, a park which offers visitors not only spectacular sights but also swimming, camping, picnicking, hiking, a visitor center, an amphitheater and interpretive programs.

The creation of Natural Tunnel began more than a million years ago in the early glacial period when groundwater bearing carbonic acid percolated through crevices and slowly dissolved surrounding limestone and dolomite bedrock. Then, what is now Stock Creek was probably diverted underground to continue carving the tunnel slowly over many centuries. The walls of the tunnel show evidence of prehistoric life, and many fossils can be found in the creek bed and on tunnel walls.
