Ranger Recommendation: Top Things To Do When You Visit Twin Lakes
Shared by Ranger Kat Bryan, Twin Lakes State Park, as Guest Blogger.
Have you ever wondered what a Virginia State Parks' Ranger would recommend you see and do at their park?
Then you will enjoy my personal list of this Ranger’s favorite things to do when you visit my park, Twin Lakes State Park:
1. EXPLORE THE LAKES BY BOAT
Rowboats, canoes, and kayaks are available to rent year-round at Twin Lakes State Park
One of the best ways to experience Twin Lakes State Park is by boat. This fall, we have canoes, kayaks, and rowboats available to rent or you can bring your own. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can also rent stand-up paddleboards and paddleboats. Click here (PDF) for our boat rental fees.
Launch your boat from one of our two launches, one on each lake, and view the park from a different perspective. Bring your fishing gear with you, including a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license, and try your best to snag a bass, catfish, or sunfish. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for those 16 and older, but don’t worry-we sell them in the park office.
2. HIT THE TRAILS
Bring some friends out to hike the Goodwin Lake Trail
Put on your hiking boots and explore the park. Twin Lakes State Park has six miles of trails that lead you through hardwood forests and around our two lakes. Our longest trail, Otter’s Path, is also accessible to bike riders. Exploring the trails gives you a wonderful opportunity to view wildlife, appreciate the peaceful sounds of nature, and get some exercise too. Click here (PDF) for our Trail Guide to help you plan your next hiking adventure.
You can also visit the adjacent Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest which has an 8-mile trail open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. A state forest permit is required for bikers and equestrians who are 16 or older, which can be purchased in the park office, 434-392-3435.
3. ATTEND A PROGRAM
Learn marksmanship skills at an Archery program
Twin Lakes State Park offers year-round programming on a variety of topics for all to enjoy. Join rangers for a guided canoe paddle, learn how to hit the target with a bow and arrow, and more.

4. HIKE/BIKE NEARBY HIGH BRIDGE TRAIL STATE PARK
The 2,400 foot long High Bridge takes you above the trees
Neighboring Twin Lakes State Park is High Bridge Trail State Park. Open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders year-round, this 31-mile rail-to-trail park is an incredible destination. Stand 125 feet above the trees on the High Bridge, for which the park is named. The Rice Parking Lot and Camp Paradise Parking Lot, which visitors can use to access the trail, are only about 15 minutes from Twin Lakes State Park.

5. ZIP LINE AT NEARBY SANDY RIVER OUTDOOR ADVENTURE PARK
If you’re looking for adventure, you’ll want to check out Sandy River Outdoor Adventure Park. Located just a few miles from Twin Lakes, the Adventure Park has over 20 zip lines and 60 obstacles traversing through the treetops. There are four levels of courses, so you can stay within your comfort zone or try conquering your fears.
The wonderful staff there will make sure you have a safe and fun experience and you might even learn you’re braver than you thought. Visit their sister operation in Farmville, the Outdoor Adventure Store, to rent a bike, canoe, or kayak.
