Meet Cabin 14 at Hungry Mother State Park

There are so many cabins to choose from at Hungry Mother State Park that I felt a bit overwhelmed at first. I hope this article will help you choose your next cabin at this fantastic park! The options I had were: a) CCC log cabin, b) frame vs cinderblock, c) one bedroom or two.

PROS

This cabin is at the end of a row of cabins up on a hill. Your deck is at the back overlooking the trees and a long sloping drop, so you have privacy when outside grilling and sitting at the picnic table playing cards. The cabin right next door had the deck overlooking our cabin, so not so private.

If you enjoy hiking around the backside of the lake or Molly's Knob this cabin is not far from the trail head (so you won't have to drive and park there). Getting to it is also a fun and scenic walk, I can only imagine it when the leaves change color in the fall!

CONS

Cinderblock means humid, at least in the summertime it does. We found that if the a/c was turned off the humidity rose and the old cabin smells. So I recommend leaving it on, or if in the off season enjoy the wood burning fireplace. Most of the cabins at Hungry Mother State Park are situated in the shade, so this means a little damper than more non-wooded state parks.

CABIN DETAILS

• Kitchen: Refrigerator, stove, coffeemaker, dishes, dishcloth, silverware, a few cooking utensils, very limited pots and pans, microwave oven, toaster, and a door out onto the deck.
• Linens: (one set per person, depending on the cabin's maximum occupancy). Cabins are climate controlled (heat and AC). Bring food, dish detergent, coffee filters, coffee, salt and pepper, nonstick cooking spray, extra dish towels, soap, extra bath towels, board games or cards. 
• Living area: rustic sofa, two chairs and a dining table with 6 chairs. You can only seat three at the table unless you move it out into the center of the room, which is tight.
• Bedrooms: 1 full size bed with a closet, 2 sets of bunk beds with a dresser and nightstand
• Hallway shelves (these are great for all your stuff)
• Charcoal pedestal grills - bring your own charcoal and starters
• Wood burning fireplace - don't bring any wood, it is prohibited. They provide the first bundle and you can purchase more at the park
• Picnic table on wood deck
• Swimming and boat launch are free for overnight guests when available.
• Two vehicles allowed. The drive way into cabin 14 is single drive, so if you have two vehicles you will have to shuffle them in and out to use both.
• Firewood is available for a fee. Overnight cabin guests receive one bundle at no charge.
• One set of linens provided per bed
• Cabins 14 has a universally accessible bathrooms
• Open porches with two rocking chairs

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT THIS CABIN?

Prime season: $112 per night or $675 per week. Mid-season: $102 per night, or $607 per week. Off-season $84 per night or $506 per week, for Virginia residents. Seasons can be found here.

INSIDE INFORMATION

The only cabin at Hungry Mother State Park that is waterfront is cabin 2, nicknamed the honeymoon cabin. This is very private, with the lake at your doorstep. It is an old CCC cabin and has the best view and setting of all the cabins at this park. I would opt for this cabin first, every time if I wanted a one bedroom.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO NEARBY?

Did you know that Hungry Mother State Park now rents Stand up paddle boards (SUP)? So add that to canoes, kayaks (one and two person) as well as john boats. This is seasonal so inquire before you get there by calling (276) 781-7400 or emailing the park here.
