Dixie Road Bluegrass Band to Play at Bear Creek Lake and Powhatan
Whether it’s a date night, family outing, or a relaxing getaway, you are invited to spend an evening at a Virginia State Park and enjoy a live performance from the Dixie Road Bluegrass Band.
You have an opportunity to see one of central Virginia's favorite bands, the Dixie Road Bluegrass Band will perform at Bear Creek Lake and Powhatan State Parks the weekend of May 19 and 20, 2017.
The Dixie Bluegrass Band will perform live at two state parks in Central Virginia
The Dixie Road Bluegrass Band will perform two shows:
- Friday, May 19, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bear Creek Lake State Park in Cumberland County.
- Saturday May 20, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the band will perform at Powhatan State Park in Powhatan County. These are both family-friendly events.
The band originates from Southern Virginia and consists of members Jim Green, Jon Garner, Carlton Stell, and Ricky Slaughter. A few of their best known renditions include “Catfish John,” “Rocky Top,” “Touch of your Hand,” and “Black Veil.” Very popular throughout the region, you can hear the quartet perform at music festivals, and several venues including the Brew House in Blackstone and the Uptown Coffee Café in Farmville.

The performances are free, but the daily parking fee of $4 per vehicle will apply.

If you want to make it a weekend getaway, Bear Creek Lake State Park has cabins and camping, and Powhatan State Park has camping and yurts available to rent. For information on overnight accommodations, click here for cabins, and here for camping.
The events will be held “rain or shine.” Limited picnic table seating will be available, so concert-goers are encouraged to bring their own chairs, and pack a picnic if they wish.

Virginia State Parks mission is to conserve natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the commonwealth and to provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with good stewardship of these lands, water and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations.
Along with that duty comes the opportunity to tell the stories of the creation and proliferation of American music heritage through education that is integrated into quality music events, programming and authentic experiences.
The piedmont region of Virginia has a huge musical story to tell. The mix of Native, African, and European cultures produced a unique and vibrant sound that founded or influenced almost all types of American music we hear today.
Bear Creek Lake and Powhatan State Parks look forward to hosting such events to make your journey in nature and appreciation of Virginia State Parks even more musical.
