Today we have so many distractions and activities to keep us constantly moving and learning new things. We play board games as a family, catch up with distant friends and family on social media, go on trips to tourist spots or spend the afternoon at one of our beautiful Virginia State Parks.

Experience the Amusements of Old at Caledon State Park's Colonial Pastimes on October 21, 2017

We get caught up in a whirlwind of things which occupy our mind and rarely slow down to look around us. Is keeping ourselves busy a new fad? Many people buy into this myth but the fact is, people have always been in the habit of distracting themselves and finding ways to have fun. While fidget spinners and apps are the new thing, we have always had little toys to play with and we will continue to evolve our toys to keep us excited and interested.

Remember Rubik’s cubes, handheld football games, and Matchbox cars of the 80s, or the Yo-Yo of the early 20th Century? Or the Frisbee of the 60s? Toys like these captured the attention of a generation just as a variety of toys captured the generations before it.

This leads us to question the distractions available to our ancestors. What did they do for fun way back in the day, did they fashion toys from sticks and rocks? Probably. But you would be surprised as to how similar many of their games and activities were to what we spend time doing today.

At Caledon State Park, we will attempt to uncover the crafts and games in the Colonial period

This month, at Caledon State Park, we will attempt to uncover the crafts and games which captured the attention of children and adults alike in the Colonial period in our Colonial Pastimes program. We will investigate and learn about the amusements and hobbies of people like the ones who lived at Caledon State Park during this time period.

Participants will have a chance to actually try out some of these age-old crafts, toys, and games. Each session will feature a different craft that you can take home.

Colonial Pastimes will take place on October 21, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. and is completely free! Space is limited though so please call the park to make a reservation (540) 663-3861.
