HUDDLESTON, Va. – Smith Mountain Lake State Park is pleased to announce the appointment of James Wright as its new park manager. Wright succeeds Chris Fritze, who has been promoted to a district manager for Virginia State Parks.
Wright, a Maryland native, has 10 years of experience in park operations, natural resource management and public service. He previously served as a chief ranger at Westmoreland, the assistant park manager at Shenandoah River and, most recently, the park manager at Staunton River.
“We’re excited to welcome James to Smith Mountain Lake,” said District Manager Andrew Philpot. “He brings a positive leadership style, a deep respect for the environment and a commitment to enhancing visitor experiences. We’re confident he will do great things for the park and surrounding community.”
As park manager, Wright will lead daily operations, staff management and long-range planning for the 1,250-acre park, which features scenic hiking trails, educational programs, campsites and cabins, boat access and one of the top-ranked lake beaches in the country.
“I’m honored to step into this role,” said Wright. “Smith Mountain Lake is a true gem, and I’m excited to work alongside a great team to protect its natural beauty and provide exceptional opportunities for visitors to connect with nature.”
The park is hosting an open house on Wednesday, July 16, at the Discovery Center from 2 to 4 p.m. to give the community a chance to meet Wright. Light refreshments will be available. To learn more about the open house, please call 540-297-6066.
