Take a fascinating hike and discover the rich history of James River State Park, from ancient fossils to the American Civil War and beyond. Along the way, we’ll pause at one of the park’s historic cemeteries and finish with breathtaking views at the Tye River Overlook. This moderate, two-mile out-and-back hike introduces you to the influential figures and cultural and natural resources that shaped the park and the surrounding region.
In celebration of Black History Month, this journey will also shine a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of African Americans to the area’s heritage. Learn about trailblazers like Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History,” born just down the James River in Buckingham County. His vision sparked the first Black history celebration, laying the foundation for what we now recognize as Black History Month. Join us to uncover these powerful legacies, connect with the land they helped cultivate, and experience history where it happened!
Please meet at the Visitor Center. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you. Parks are for everyone, please let us know if you need special accommodation.
