Animals in Winter

Location of James River State Park in Virginia

Where

James River State Park, 104 Green Hill Dr., Gladstone, VA 24553.
Visitor Center

When

Jan. 11, 2026. 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Join us for a lesson in the unique adaptations that make animals well suited for surviving the colder winter months. This is an opportunity to learn more about what makes the diverse animals that live at James River State Park unique. Together, we will think about how we change our own behaviors to stay comfortable in the winter and then learn about how animals change their behaviors to stay safe and warm as temperatures drop. This program will also give you an opportunity to see firsthand how fat layers help protect animals from frigid, icy temperatures through a craft and experiment.

Please meet at the Visitor Center. All materials provided. Suitable for all ages. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather and bring a water bottle with you. Parks are for everyone, please let us know if you need special accommodation.

For more information, please call (434) 942-3545 or email Tess.Himelspach@dcr.virginia.gov.
