Winter Tree Identification Hike

Location of Widewater State Park in Virginia

Where

Widewater State Park, 101 Widewater State Park Road, Stafford, VA 22554.
Visitor Center

When

Jan. 18, 2026. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Tree ID can be tough enough, but a tree in winter leaves a lot to be desired.

Foliage isn't the only way to successfully ID a tree; there is also bark, buds, and body (a tree's shape)! Come learn the essentials of Winter tree identification with our rangers on Long Pond trail. The hike will concentrate on some core species common throughout the mid-Atlantic region so that you can be confident with your Winter tree ID skills wherever you go!

Please be sure to dress for the weather! Hats, gloves, and scarves are highly encouraged as we will be outside on a hike for the majority of this program. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center before starting the hike.

Two adults on a hike.
