Kick off the new year with the park's First Day Hike. Enjoy fresh air, scenic views, and a journey through one of the most biodiverse river valleys in the country! Participants for the First Day Hike will meet park rangers and volunteers at Powell River Trail trailhead in Appalachia, Virginia. Once on the trail, participants will explore and discover many aspects of the beautiful Powell River.
This moderate 2.4-mile out-and-back walk will take approximately two hours and offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural and cultural history of the Powell River and its surrounding valley. As the second most biodiverse waterway in the nation—just behind the Clinch River—the Powell River is home to an incredible variety of wildlife and fascinating stories of the people who have lived along its banks.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. In the event of inclement weather, the hike will be canceled. No registration is required. For more information, contact the park at (276) 523-1322.
