This Thanksgiving weekend, trade shopping bags for backpacks and join us for a reflective guided hike at Douthat State Park in celebration of Opt Outside Day.
As we walk the peaceful Tobacco House Ridge Trail, we’ll take time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us—from the crisp mountain air and golden leaves to the stunning views of Douthat Lake, the historic CCC-built spillway, and the surrounding mountains. Along the way, a park ranger will share stories of the park’s history, point out seasonal flora and fauna, and invite hikers to reflect on what they’re thankful for. This hike is a gentle reminder that some of the best gifts can’t be bought—they’re found in nature, in shared moments, and in the quiet awe of the outdoors.
What is Opt Outside?
Opt Outside began as a movement to step away from the chaos of Black Friday and instead embrace the healing power of nature. It’s a chance to slow down, reconnect, and be present
This hike is approximately 2 miles long following a single track path. The trail is rated moderate and has uneven terrain with elevation gain.
Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
