Aliens Among Us

Location of Douthat State Park in Virginia

Where

Douthat State Park, 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro, VA 24460.
Discovery Center

When

Oct. 18, 2025. 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Think you’ve spotted an alien? Not from another planet—these aliens are plants and animals that don’t belong in our local ecosystems! Join a park ranger at the Discovery Center for a guided hike as we explore the park and point out invasive species hiding in plain sight. Along the way, you’ll learn how these “unwelcome visitors” can crowd out native plants, disrupt wildlife habitats, and alter the balance of our forests and streams. We’ll discuss the history of some of these species, how they spread, and what makes native species vulnerable to their takeover. This hands-on hike will sharpen your eyes for spotting invasives and help you understand why protecting native plants and animals is so important.

The trail is approximately 0.5 miles long and includes uneven terrain, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and come prepared to explore.

Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov or call 540-862-8114.
