Homeschool Naturalists: Hooked on Fishing

Join us at Douthat State Park for Homeschool Naturalists, a monthly outdoor education series designed for homeschool students of all ages. Each session explores a different nature-based topic through hands-on activities, guided discovery, and time in the great outdoors. 

This session of Homeschool Naturalist is Hooked on Fishing. We’ll start on land by getting familiar with rods, reels, and their 'fin-tastic' parts, then play a fun casting game to test your aim. You’ll also learn two essential fishing knots and how to rig your line like a pro. After that, we’ll head to the creek or lake to try and catch the big one, or at least something with fins. For your younger homeschool students, we will have a fish printing craft for them to do instead of fishing.

All equipment is provided. Participants ages 16 and up must have a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license, which can be purchased at the park office, camp store, or online HERE. Park guests with no license are welcome to attend but will not be able to fish.

October 1:  All About Bats
November 5: What's My Wingspan?
February 4: Fur, Tracks, and Scat
March 4: Douthat Dwellers: Owls
April 1: Macroinvertebrates and Watersheds
May 6: Vernal Pool Explorers

Programs run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please meet at the Discovery Center.

This is a family-friendly program; parents or guardians must stay with their children. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for outdoor conditions. This is a rain or shine event.
