Ever wondered what critters are crawling beneath the surface of a stream? Join us on a fun adventure as we search the stream for interesting, tiny critters: freshwater invertebrates. We’ll discover how these tiny creatures play essential roles in keeping our waterways healthy, supporting larger wildlife, and serving as indicators of environmental quality. Get ready for a hands-on adventure as we carefully lift rocks, examine the critters we find, and learn about their importance in the ecosystem. Don’t forget to wear closed-toe shoes, as we’ll be getting our feet wet while we explore the fascinating world beneath the water's surface.
The program is conducted in accordance with Virginia state law; park staff possess the proper permits and training to briefly handle certain wildlife. Parks are for everyone. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please call 540-862-8114 or email Hannah.Johnson@dcr.virginia.gov.
