This program explores the lives of the thousands of enslaved people who freed themselves by moving toward Union lines during the final months of the war. It examines the choices they made, the risks they faced, and the meaning of freedom as Union and Confederate forces moved across Virginia in the spring of 1865. Speak to a ranger in the Visitor Center to start this program anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
