Celebrate National Trails Day by stepping into the quiet, mysterious woods of Douthat State Park after dark for an unforgettable adventure. As part of this special day, we’re diving into the nocturnal world of owls, some of nature's most fascinating creatures, known for their silent flight and haunting calls. But which owls call these woods their home?
Join a park ranger for a hike as we explore the vital role owls play in maintaining the health of the environment. From controlling rodent populations to helping balance ecosystems, these remarkable birds are essential to the natural world.
During the hike, we’ll try calling out to the owls, and with a little luck, we might hear their calls echoing through the trees. While spotting them is rare, you may catch a glimpse of their silhouette or hear their distinctive hoots in the distance.
This hike will take you over uneven terrain, navigating the woods at night, which brings certain risks. The trail could be up to a mile long, so come prepared for the challenge. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring a flashlight, and be sure to sign up in advance at the Park Office to reserve your spot. Let’s honor National Trails Day by connecting with the wilderness under the stars!
