Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count is a community/citizen science project to collect data on wild birds. Bird observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before annual migrations. The Southern Piedmont Master Naturalists will be on hand to identify and count as many birds as we can find. Both beginners and experienced birders are welcome! Expect to walk about 2-4 miles on mostly level terrain. Please wear layers because it's likely to be cold when we begin and warm up as we go along. Sturdy footwear is essential, as the terrain may be wet in places. Bring water and snacks, and bring binoculars if you have them, to get the most out of this event. The Visitor Center has restrooms and water and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so please plan accordingly.
