Earth Day Bird Count - Ivanhoe Birding Trail
Where
New River Trail State Park, 116 Orphanage Dr., Max Meadows, VA 24360.
Ivanhoe Car Parking Lot - 356 Riverview Rd. Ivanhoe, Va 24350
When
April 22, 2025. 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Join us for our annual Earth Day Bird Count on the newly developed Ivanhoe Birding Trail. Bird surveys offer a way to learn about population trends; especially our migratory birds that travel thousands of miles each spring. We welcome birders of all skill levels. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars, wear closed-toe shoes, and carry some food and water.
Participants will meet at the Ivanhoe Access parking lot at 7:30 a.m. Please DO NOT park at the horse trailer parking area under the trestle. We will then drive at 8 a.m. to the Birding Trailhead.
Why are we birding so early? Have you ever heard the saying "the early bird gets the worm?" Many birds are most active in the early morning, taking advantage of the abundance of insects at that hour. Expect to hike about 1.5-2 miles on the birding trail. There is a picnic shelter, so feel free to pack a lunch. We look forward to seeing you out there!
