When
June 14, 2025. 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
On June 14th and 15th, we invite you to visit the park's historic cemetery for Virginia State Parks History & Culture Weekend. While the old farm road leading to the cemetery is normally off-limits to the public, you'll have the opportunity on this day to drive directly to the cemetery and park in the parking lot nearby. Park rangers will offer historical context and share information that has been uncovered and the mysteries that are still being pursued.
As you drive alongside the park's meadows, you'll gaze out upon the very same farm fields where those who are buried once lived and worked. Tucked away in a shady grove of forest surrounded by those fields, you'll find traditional burial plants, field stones, and a few engraved headstones.
Many graves belong to those who were enslaved and those who worked as sharecroppers. While most are unmarked, three headstones show the names of loved ones longs since passed: Alpheus Hudson, Reverend Samuel Jasper, and Tony Funn. What do we know about them today, and what remains to be uncovered?
Register here to let us know you're coming. We will contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
