An Army Marches on Its Stomach

When
Oct. 26, 2024. 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
The requirements of survival cannot be met on an empty stomach. The tribulations of war extract tolls on the mind and body alike. Not least of these being hunger. They often had to eat on the go, but as exhaustion set in, armies had to stop to give beast and man alike a chance to rest. In these scant moments of respite, gathered in the tenuous firelight, men would share stories, jokes, and above all, food.
Join a handful of rangers as we explore what these soldiers could have had to eat, how these things were prepared, and the ingenuity of the common soldier when only given a handful of ingredients to cook with. After the demonstration has concluded, packets detailing instructions to recreate these wartime meals will be offered free of charge.
The program will be held rain or shine and is free to attend. It will be held at the historic Hillsman House as a part of our night-time Campfire Chronicles series of programs. For more information, please contact the Visitor Center at 804-561-7510. We hope to see you there!
