Explore the Panhandle Multi-use Trail on this 3-mile hike. The Occoneechee Panhandle has an amazing history beginning with the Occaneechi Indians then transitioning to a thriving farming community through the 18th and 19th centuries. We will visit the site of the Occoneechee Farm. Field Jefferson, President Thomas Jefferson’s uncle, established the farm in the mid 1700’s. The remaining foot print of the farm features a farm manager’s residence, livestock barn, ice pit, tobacco barns, cemetery, and more. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and wear rugged hiking shoes.
