Participants who are interested in the Prowl the Powell nature series should meet volunteers and park staff at the front gate of the museum. Dates will stay the same, but times are subject to change.
The June Prowl the Powell nature series will be local geology. Participants will join park rangers and UVA-Wise staff on a walk along the Powell River in Big Stone Gap, Virginia they will learn about the million of years of forces at play which created the Appalachian Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau, as well as the Powell River and its valley.
Participants will discover the diversity of rocks and minerals that have forged our region’s pathways, from the extraction of coal, iron, and shale, to the beautiful mountain ranges and biological diversity that draw travelers and tourists to the region every year.
The Prowl the Powell monthly nature series will be held rain or shine. Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing for the weather and comfortable walking shoes. Binoculars are encouraged but not required. Registration is not required for this program.
