Camp Paradise - 1466 Camp Paradise Road, Rice, VA 23966
When
April 6, 2024. 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
During the final stages of the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee and his army faced relentless pressure from Federal troops as they attempted to reach supplies at Farmville, Virginia. The key obstacle in their path was the High Bridge, spanning the Appomattox River and crucial for their access to much-needed provisions. As part of the commemoration of the 159th anniversary of the battles at High Bridge, park staff will offer programs specifically tailored to the events that took place on those crucial days. These programs will cover the Appomattox Campaign, specifically the actions within High Bridge Trail State Park. Come walk in the footsteps of the 19th Maine Infantry and follow their route as they raced to secure the crucial bridges across the Appomattox River and enable the Union Army to close in on Robert E. Lee’s retreating army.
The talks will begin at the Camp Paradise parking lot at noon and 2 p.m. each day and will move to some areas of interest. There will be some moderate walking on trails so please wear comfortable shoes and bring water. For more information, call the park office at (434) 315-0457 or email highbridgetrail@dcr.virginia.gov.
