Earth Day

Location of Bear Creek Lake State Park in Virginia

Where

Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Various locations

When

April 20, 2024. 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

The 2024 Earth Day theme is Planet vs. Plastic. Items made from plastic impact the park in many ways from being unsightly litter to creating a health risk to wildlife and the health of the land.

Long before plastic containers were invented, earthenware served as a storage material. Join in at a Pottery Craft session at 10 a.m. Stop by the park office and purchase a pottery ticket for $2 per person or $6 for four people, then bring your receipt to the Acorn Loop Shelter for a slab of air-dry clay to mold into a bowl or sculpture.

At 1 p.m. visit the Ranger Table near the Lakeside Snack Bar to discuss the environmental impacts of choices we make at home and options available to reduce that impact. There will be a display of easily obtainable items you might not know about that can replace or help you reduce your use of the plastic ones so common in daily life. This event is FREE.

Any day, simple stroll the park trails and take in a breath of air or the feel of tree bark and count your blessings, all at risk from plastics threatening our environment and personal health.
