Where

Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
Multiple Locations

When

May 20, 2023. 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Bring your kids over to the park for a fun-filled day! You are invited to explore the park with Arks for Park's self-paced adventure activities, meet reptiles from a local wildlife rehab organization, and to make your own paper box turtle.

10 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Self-Paced Adventure Packs (River Bend Campground parking lot)

Come by the program area next to the parking lot to pick up an Arks for Parks adventure pack. These exploratory hands-on activities for school-aged children come in backpacks and plastic tubs that can be checked out for the day or overnight for families that are camping.

The packs are free to check out! A staff member will coach and guide the entire family on how to use the materials and equipment. The pack's activities focus on Virginia's wildlife and natural environment. Topics include: amphibians and reptiles, birds, global cycles, food webs, insects, mammals, rocks, trees, weather, and new this year...wolves.

1 p.m.: Close Encounters with the Reptile Kind (Shelter 1, near the playground)

Who has cold blood, eats only once a week, and can smell with their tongue? Come meet some amazing creatures who share this planet with us yet have adaptations that seem almost alien. Join educators from AWARE as they introduce us to reptiles both native and exotic. AWARE is a local Virginia non-profit organization created to provide an alliance of concerned citizens and permitted wildlife rehabilitators dedicated to helping wildlife in need.

3 p.m.: Box Turtle Beauties (Shelter 1, near the playground)

During this craft, you'll discover what makes Virginia's native box turtles special and make your very own paper box turtle. Their shells come in an endless variety of beautiful patterns...each one as unique as a fingerprint. Some box turtles even have yellow skin and red eyes. Let's make a work of art in honor of these amazing creatures.
