What is a vernal pool? If you’re unfamiliar with these amazing habitats, you’re in for a treat! Discover the hidden wonders of these ephemeral pools, and find out why they are essential to the survival of many wildlife populations. We’ll take a walk through the woods to visit one of our pools at the park, where we will search for all sorts of tiny creatures. Since the vernal pool is located off of the trail, we will be walking through brambles and muddy areas. Please wear closed-toed shoes and long pants to protect your feet and legs.

This program is conducted in accordance with Virginia Law; park staff and volunteers possess the proper permits and training to collect and briefly handle wildlife. Due to the sensitive nature of these habitats registration is required, and children need to be accompanied by an adult. Register online or call (804) 372-0720.

Meet at the trailhead near the Playground Parking Lot.
