Bear Creek Lake State Park is a great venue to celebrate National Kids to Parks Day. There are several programs planned throughout the day to engage youth in the outdoors. The schedule is as follows:
10 a.m. Discovery Hike: Meet at the Lakeside Snack Bar for a ranger-led hike through the forest. We may find some interesting discoveries along the way. The trail will cover about a mile with uneven terrain. No fee. All ages welcome.
10 a.m. Basic Archery: We offer an informative introduction to archery including different types of bows, proper technique, and safety precautions. All equipment is provided; however, the equipment is not suitable for youths younger than 8 years old. The program fee is $5 per person. Advance registration through the park office is required, and spaces are limited. You can contact the park office at (804) 492-4410.
1 p.m. Meet a Ranger: What do you want to be when you grow up? Find out if being a park ranger sounds like a cool job to you. Bear Creek Lake State Park's very own rangers will be available to answer questions about the various roles a park ranger may play. Rangers will be located at the Beach Area. No fee.
3 p.m. Canoe Tour: Journey across Bear Creek Lake in a canoe to experience a different side of the park. No prior canoe experience is necessary and all equipment is provided, though children under 6 years of age must provide their own approved life jacket. Advance registration through the park office and payment of the $5 per person program fee is required. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible guardian. Closed-toe footwear with at least a heel strap is required.
