Nov. 5, 2022. 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

In 1730, enslaved African Americans expected Virginia's new Royal Governor to declare their freedom by order of the King.  When this didn't happen, hundreds of them from James City to Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties revolted that fall.  Many were caught and punished.  Yet others found a refuge in the Great Dismal Swamp of Virginia & North Carolina.  These brave men and women established the Maroon communities where they lived in freedom and seclusion until the end of the Civil War.  Join us for our Rebellion & Runaway Walk at 10:00 am and Rebellions & Runaways Along the River talk at 1:00 pm and discover these fascinating pages of our history.
