When

Aug. 13, 2022. 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Microplastics, or tiny pieces of plastic, are one of the most commonly found pieces of litter collected from the park's shoreline of the Potomac River. These items are officially defined as plastics less than five millimeters in size and can either be broken down from larger plastic items, or were originally micro-sized. On beaches, these tiny particles can be seen as multicolored bits in the sand. In the water, microplastic pollution is often consumed by marine animals.

Widewater needs your help collecting these microplastics from the shoreline. Join rangers to learn more about the impact of these harmful pollutants on our ecosystem, then grab a bag to start collecting them from the shore. Participants should bring their own gloves, wear sturdy shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather. Trash bags will be provided by park staff.
