Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Take a new adventure to Claytor Lake State Park and discover a whole new way to play outside this Kids to Parks Day.

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Hooked on Fishing @ the Water's Edge Meeting Facility back dock 

Join the rangers for a short discussion of fishing techniques and of the fish commonly found in our lake. This event is for beginners as well as accomplished fisherman. A practice casting area is provided as well as equipment and bait. Feel free to bring your own equipment if you wish. Let's plan on a great morning in the park! A valid Virginia fishing license is required for those 16 years old or older and may be purchased in the Gift Shop, or online.

1:00 p.m. Claytor Fish Crafts @ the Beach Building 

Learn to identify the fish commonly found in our lake as you create a fish print using the Japanese printing process of Gyotaku. In the 1800's this process was used to keep a record of the species and size of a fisherman's catch.

3:00 p.m. - Roaming Ranger @ throughout the park 

Watch for a roaming ranger with an interesting mini-program for you to enjoy.                 

4:00 p.m. - Scavenger Hunt @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D 

Enjoy this self-guided scavenger hunt for all ages. A ranger will be available at the campfire circle to  assist you on you hunt. You may share your finds with one another and discover lots of interesting things about our park.                    

8:00 p.m. -  Live Reptiles Campfire @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D 

Join us by the campfire to relax and learn about reptiles commonly found in our park. Master Naturalist,  Judy McCord, will present the program accompanied by some our park's live reptilian volunteers.  Bench seating is provided, but limited, so feel free to bring chairs or blankets.
