I came across this article today and thought it was worth sharing with our Virginia State Park fans.

After a few days of being stuck inside a house, the need to get out gets stronger. The same is true for our pets.

Safety is important for winter walks

When you are planning a hike outside during the winter months, please take note of current and upcoming weather conditions. In the mountains of Virginia, the weather can turn severe in a short amount of time.

It is always best if you know your surroundings. Hungry Mother, New River Trail, and Wilderness Road State Parks all have portions of trails that are flat. During inclement weather, special attention should be paid to grade of the trail and any elevation changes (elevation changes may affect the weather in that area).

Hiking during the winter months is a great way to beat the winter blues or cabin fever. Taking a little extra time to check out all important information will only make your experience more rewarding.

The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.

For more information about Virginia State Parks’ activities and amenities or to make reservations in one of the more than 1,800 campsites or 300 climate-controlled cabins, call the Virginia State Parks Reservation Center at 800-933-PARK or visit www.virginiastateparks.gov.
