When a Kayak Trip Becomes a Beach Hike

Expect the Unexpected at False Cape

I found out that kayaking on Back Bay at False Cape State Park can be hit or miss this time of year. The wind, the waves, and the water temperature were not cooperating during my planned kayak trip on Sunday, October 5, 2014. While this sometimes happens, the park usually offers an alternative program at a reduced price for would-be kayakers whose trips get cancelled.

The park is offering a variety of program this Fall. Fall is the best time to explore False Cape because there are fewer bugs and you don't get so hot hiking the narrow, tree-canopied trails.  Click here for a current schedule of programs. Remember, you can always call the park at 757-426-7128 to book a private program for your group.

Instead of kayaking on Back Bay, we took a tram tour of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and went on a ranger-guided hike of the park's maritime forest and beach. Wow! What an experience!

Park Ranger Rebecca Martin was our tour guide and she taught us a lot!

I've heard that you never know what to expect when you get False Cape. I tasted edible plants (Loblolly pine tastes like citrus); saw raccoon, coyote, and wild pig tracks; and marveled at the pristine, undeveloped beach.

False Cape State Park is located in the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach. The park does not permit vehicle access. Access to the park is by hiking, biking, kayaking or by participating in a schedule program that provides transport into the park.
