Waggin' Tails: Juno Goes to the Lake
Hey yawl, I just wanted to share another happy tail from our good friend Juno, this time she got to visit a lake and spend the night in a bark cabin at Bear Creek Lake State Bark. Read her dog-blog to find out what she got up to.
Hey everyone, it's me, Juno!
I got to visit Bear Creek Lake State Bark this time
Have you ever stayed in a cabin at a Virginia State Bark? I just got to spend three nights in cabin 4 at Bear Creek Lake State Park with my mom, aunties, and doggy cousins!
Cats are welcome in the cabins too, but thankfully mom left the kitty at home so it was just us dogs.
We doggies liked sniffing around the cabin and eating treats
Dogs like nice views too
On our first day, everyone woke up really early and watched the mist rising off the water; it was so pretty, and I liked seeing the geese drift by.
After breakfast we ended up accidentally walking all the way around the lake, which is much larger than it seems, or at least bigger than my mom thought. Humans are silly! But it was still a nice trail--I sniffed lots of things and we even saw a black snake and a pileated woodpecker.
Hurry up, mom, there are trails to explore!
Next we piled into the car and drove about 30 minutes to High Bridge Trail State Bark, and guess what? The humans got lost again! Since we were tired from our unplanned lake hike, we started walking from the River Road lot, which is about a mile from the high bridge.
Usually I don't like heights much, but this bridge was so wide and stable that I didn't even notice, I was just happy to sniff the smells on the wind from 125 feet above the river. My people thought it was awesome how far you could see and how small everything on the ground looked.
LOVE describes how I feel about Virginia State Barks, and what a coincidence that my bandana matched the flowers
Sniffin' trails with my cousins
After all that--about 7 miles of walking--we just wanted a quiet evening, and the bark is the perfect place for that! We all sat out on the deck and listened to the birds.
Mom, stop photographing us, we're sleeping
In the morning, the humans thought it was a great idea to take a boat out on the lake. The bark rangers were really nice and helped us decide on a 14' rowboat to rent so that all six of us could go out together.
Although I was scared to climb into the boat, once we were out on the water it turns out that it's really fun! Bring some water and some snackies and spend a couple hours enjoying the peace. I'm so glad this Virginia State Bark allows doggies on rental boats.
Just make sure you remind your people to pull over and let you go potty if you're afloat for a while.
Boating makes us happy, my cousins Kali and Pixie liked it too
Our last night the humans made a fire, and I loved helping them pick out the perfect sticks for roasting marshmallows. Since my fur is short and the evening air was chilly, I enjoyed hanging out a few feet from the flames to stay warm, even though I couldn't share any of the tasty treats.
Even on the last morning, when we were trying to pack everything up and go home, we still made time to go back down to the lake for one last look and sniff.
This was our first stay at a Virginia State Bark, and everyone agreed they'd come back in a heartbeat!
From the editor: You may remember Juno from her first guest blog "Juno goes to the beach" when she visited Mason Neck State Bark. Since then we have been following her on Instagram, and boy does that girl love Virginia State Barks. And we think she is a pretty cool dawg.
Interesting to note that our first experience overnight at a Virginia State Bark that began our lifelong love of visiting all the barks also began in cabin 4 at Bear Creek Lake State Bark, way back in June 2008.
It was important for me to direct the unloading operation at the bark cabin. This is the same cabin Juno stayed in, number 4 at Bear Creek Lake State Bark. See that cute little girl? She is my cousin from Washington State and turns 18 in September, the one you can't see is my sissie, and she is now 23, married and has a baby.
The lake was a lot of fun for our family, and that is my other big sis on the far right carrying the kayak, she is also married now and guess what, Dad still has that truck. I called it my go-go mo-beel as it is what takes us all to Virginia State Barks.
Remember, paws were meant to get muddy,
And if they aren't then yawl aren't tryin' hard 'nough!
