Virginia's Best Kept Secret - A College Student's Perspective
Shared by Braylin Davis - Intern, as Guest Blogger.
Just an hour away from three different universities in Lynchburg, not nearly enough students know about the activities offered at what I believe is Virginia’s Best Kept Secret, James River State Park.
Located in under an hour's drive from Lynchburg, James River State Park is the perfect scenic getaway for any college student looking to de-stress.
The park is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is home to many student and family friendly activities. From kayaking on the James River to hiking through nature, this park has it all. James River State Park is the type of picturesque getaway that everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime. Even if you only have time for a day trip, the drive out is very much worth the time.
WHAT IS THERE TO DO?
River Floats

Float the James River to reset your mind for the week
For those who have their own kayak, canoes or tubes, there is a launch at the park. But for guests who don’t, they can rent canoes, kayaks, and inflatable tubes to enjoy the three miles of river located within the park seasonally from the Outdoor Adventure Canoe Livery
Hours of Operation:
- Open Friday through Sunday from the third weekend in April through Labor Day; call for specific hours.
- Open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day; call for specific hours.
- Open Friday through Sunday after Labor Day through the third weekend in October; call for specific hours.
Equipment availability is subject to weather and river conditions. Call the livery at 434-933-8682 for reservations and information about current conditions.
Guests can also rent personal floatation devices, paddles and coolers. Schedule a pre-planned float here as well. Reservations are encouraged especially during the summer months.
Trails

Nothing is more relaxing than enjoying nature
Some of the best views in Virginia can be found by taking a hike up to a lookout, like viewing the exact spot where the James River merges with the Tye River. Being able to watch the two bodies of water converge is truly a sight to see. The park has 15 miles of multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Trails here are rated as easy and moderate making is convenient for the trails to be experienced and enjoyed by everyone. Some trails lead to overlooks, others to restful spots alongside the river and fishing holes.

Fishing

Fishing is a chance to relax and enjoy nature
Fishing is also a great activity that guests can enjoy at the park. The park is a hot spot for smallmouth bass fishing, and catfish, pan fish and the occasional river gar can be caught as well. James River State Park also has three freshwater ponds for those who prefer more leisurely fishing. This park offers a great hideaway to leave behind the stress of school or just life in general, and kick back and enjoy yourself.
Just remember to bring your valid fishing license so you’re all set to have a day packed full of relaxation and fun.
