My time spent in quarantine was a time I didn’t realize I needed. Hours upon hours were spent walking the trails throughout my hometown.

A good portion of them being at Hungry Mother State Park. I finally conquered the Lake Trail, 5.7 miles of pure scenic wonder and green bliss. My favorite portion of the trail is from the beach area to the spillway. To and back is only about two miles, but you’re around the water the whole time!

I would walk at different times every day so that I could experience the sights and smells in a different way. There’s something so unique and calming about an early morning walk by the water.

There’s one bench with a view that I always admire from the road. The only thing about it is, you can’t stop on the road and just soak it all it. I would always look forward to that spot. It was the perfect spot to just stop and breathe. I felt like I could breathe in all the positive energy and exhale any worry or doubt.

If you look at the front of almost any Virginia State Park Trail Guide, you’ll find this quote: “Virginia State Parks are a tonic for the mind, body and spirit.” As someone who worked in the Discovery Center at Hungry Mother previously, I read that statement many times before. But it wasn’t until I was truly forced to slow down my busy life that I started to understand the true meaning behind it.

I have never been much of an outdoorsman, I am not an avid hiker. However, I found so much peace and comfort while walking these trails. It was like seeing the world from a fresh perspective. There are so many things going on in this world right now, but when you come onto the trails, it’s like a safe place.

Whatever quest is next for you, just remember that if we all recreate responsibly we can keep making memories in such beautiful places.
