Snow Day!

By John GreshamPosted February 12, 2014

Winter, with its bare trees and dead grass, can be very dreary especially when you are stuck inside!

But to some but when the wonderful, frozen flakes fall from the sky and collect on the ground, even the coldest day becomes something to savor and enjoy. Childhood memories of days off from school, sledding, making snow angels warm us as much as a cup of hot chocolate.

No school it's a snow day!

Virginia State Parks are open year-round, even on days when schools are closed for snow

By taking a few extra precautions, you and your family can make fun February “Winter Wonderland” memories. Here are a few tips:

·         Check weather reports and make sure all winter storms are passed before traveling

·         Check the road conditions through local media and the Virginia Dept. of Transportation website to determine if the roads are passable

·         Drive with caution and be alert for slick spots

·         Avoid stepping on icy ponds and streams

·         Dress accordingly as temperatures may be below freezing

Keep an eye on the weather

York River State Park is a favorite sledding spot among locals for its broad hillsides near #3. When the pond isn’t iced over, crappie anglers stalk the docks and shoreline to catch their favorite fish.  Recently, local cross country skiers have taken advantage of our broad multi-use trails for winter adventures.

Even York River can ice over, so be careful when playing in the snow!
