About
State parks in central and southern Virginia have come together to bring you the Routes of Rhythm Music Trail. The parks present music, educational programs and experiences that tell the story of the area's music heritage.

Old time music is a form of music with history as old as our heritage. Other than Native American music, it is the oldest form of North American traditional music. The earliest label featuring old time music can be traced back to the 1920’s.

The music style involves plucking strings to create music perfectly fit for close harmonies. Music was just a part of life during that time. The traditions were passed down from generation to generation.

That is continuing today thanks to groups like the Farm Use Old Time String Band. The seven piece band plays old time music and offers contra dance lessons a half an hour before the show. It is a fun night of entertainment laced with a history lesson of music and dance styles.

Benchmark Community Bank is proud to sponsor the inaugural season for Routes of Rhythm Music Trail by Virginia State Parks.
