Winter often brings to mind cozy nights by the fireplace and cups of hot cocoa, but it can also be the perfect time to plan an outdoor adventure at one of Virginia’s 42 state parks.

Nestled amidst rolling hills and scenic landscapes, James River State Park is a hidden gem that offers a unique winter experience. The park's trails, normally bustling with hikers and mountain bikers in the warmer seasons, take on a serene ambiance, inviting you to explore at your own pace while reconnecting with nature and unwinding in the quiet beauty of winter.

Your guide to visiting James River State Park this winter

Outdoor adventures:

Tye River Overlook
A trip to James River State Park isn’t complete without going to the Tye River Overlook

Hiking: Lace up your boots and embark on one of the park's 18 picturesque hiking trails, totaling 22 miles. The Tye River Overlook Trail is a must-do. This 0.1-mile ADA-accessible trail is covered in smooth, crushed gravel and can be accessed by hiking a portion of Cabell Trail; however, guests with limited accessibility can contact the park for permission to drive to the start of the Tye River Overlook Trail.

Wildlife watching: Winter provides a unique opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts. Bundle up and bring your binoculars to spot various bird species, deer and other wildlife against the backdrop of a winter landscape.

Fishing: James River State Park, which offers 3 miles of shoreline along the James River, is renowned for its fishing opportunities. While some may shy away from winter fishing, the park offers a peaceful experience with the possibility of catching some trophy-sized fish. In addition to a boat launch and a car-top launch, the park has a universally accessible fishing pier and a 0.25-mile-long wheelchair-accessible trail around Green Hill Pond.

Stargazing: Winter brings clearer, crisper air with lower humidity, creating excellent conditions for stargazing. Pair this with James River’s International Dark Sky designation, and you will not want to take your eyes off the sky. So, grab your telescope, stop by the park’s visitor center for a free star and planet map, and head to the designated International Dark-Sky Association viewing area for a sky like you’ve never seen.

Self-guided activities: While you’re at the visitor center grabbing your star and planet map, ask about the different self-guided programs the park offers, including a photo scavenger hunt, geocaching and explorer backpacks. These programs are great for all ages and provide a unique way to see different areas of the park. In addition to self-guided activities, the park offers a few ranger-led programs throughout the winter. You can learn more about these programs at the visitor center or online.

Overnight accommodations:

Cabins: To cater to winter visitors, the park offers climate-controlled cabins and family lodges that can house anywhere from one guest to 16 guests. They are simply furnished and have a microwave, refrigerator, oven, dishes, cooking utensils, silverware and glassware. Complete with a fireplace, you’re going to feel right at home when you rent a cabin or lodge at James River State Park.

Camping: For the more adventurous campers, the park’s three tent-only primitive campgrounds are open year-round. If you want something near the river, reserve a site at Walnut Grove or Canoe Landing. If you prefer the woods, head to Branch Pond. Each campground has a primitive restroom, and potable water is available at the park’s picnic shelters.

Camping and cabin reservations can be made at reservevaparks.com or by calling 1-800-933-PARK.
