Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Where can you get away for a few days and bring your four legged family member with? Come to Virginia, we have the solution.

The whole family can come out to Bear Creek Lake State Park in VirginiaSittin' on the dock of the lake watchin' time go by

Virginia State Parks cabins and lodges are 100% pet friendly and we invite you to check us out. Before moving to Virginia, we had one option, camp. But if you are like me, you want to bring our four-legged family along when we get away for a few days or annual summer vacation. You go through the whole guilt process trying to plan your trip, the heavy burden being "Who is going to watch our dog" or "We don't want to kennel her".

Here is the solution

Virginia State Park cabins and lodges allow pets to stay with their families for a low nightly fee.

Recently I visited another state park system, and just out of curiosity I asked about Pet Friendly Lodging. They replied, $40 per pet to stay in a cottage or cabin, and we only have two available that are pet friendly. I was blown away, thinking about this great opportunity we offer back in Virginia to our park visitors. I thanked them, and knew I probably wouldn't be back to stay. The park was beautiful, the staff were very friendly, but hike and stay without our dog? Nope, not going to happen.

At the event I attended most everyone I spoke to mentioned they had a dog, and find it hard to leave them behind. Asking someone to watch their dog for more than a day or two seemed way too difficult, and paying for them to be locked up in a cage in a kennel was definitely not preferred. This is what I told them:

Come to Virginia State Parks and bring your dogs!

Dogs just wanna have fun, with their families (at Virginia State Parks)Dogs just wanna have fun (with their family)

Petiquette

A fancy term that basically means "what we expect from you as the pet owner" can be found here. You already know most of this, vaccinated (with proof, ie rabies tag on collar), leash no longer than 6 feet in length and kept under control at all times, clean up after them (please), etc.

If you bring them by the park office they may even get a treat.

COMMENTS

Virginia State Parks (October 11, 2016 06:10:38 PM): Irma - All of our cabins are pet friendly and nearly all of them are first floor only. However, we do not have any fenced yards.

Irma Bell (October 11, 2016 05:31:11 PM): Looking for a cabin that allows dogs and fenced yard. Also bedroom (s) in the first floor for January 13- 15, 2017

Virginia State Parks (June 16, 2016 05:11:43 PM): Kenneth - we have not charged a fee to bring dogs camping for over years now. See other comments.

Kenneth Martin (June 16, 2016 04:40:24 PM): I Think it is just wrong to charge campers to bring their dog with them !!!!! Maybe if you have more than one , charge a small fee , but not nightly . How about horses & boats ?

Virginia State Parks (June 11, 2016 10:02:47 AM): Daniel - Wise Point Boat Launch is not in a Virginia State Park. It is operated by the US Fish and Wildlife. Launch at Kiptopeke State Park for an Eastern Shore launch that welcomes your dog.

Daniel Burke (June 11, 2016 09:56:03 AM): This is great but not quote true. I went to put my boat in at Wise Point only to find 'no pets allowed' signs posted like the gestapo. Can anyone explain the logic? I have a Portuguese Water Dog that goes everywhere with me.

Virginia State Parks (June 10, 2016 11:44:09 PM): Gary - We dropped the camping pet fee more than two years ago.

Gary Whitley (June 10, 2016 11:41:23 PM): I can appreciate not charging for dogs in your cabins, but why penalize people with a fee for having dogs when camping at the state parks?

Nancy (June 07, 2016 06:34:55 PM): We always take our dogs with us when we vacation at a park. They love the long walks and swimming in anything larger than a puddle!
