Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m. through April 30 per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Park Packs are backpacks that have a particular theme, like Colonial History or Nocturnal Animals, and contain storybooks, field guides, and equipment related to that particular theme.  Explore Packs are backpacks that are general interest and have basic field guides, binoculars, and songbird players.  Most parks keep these backpacks in their office or visitor center.  Park guests, after filling out some forms, can check out these backpacks at no charge.  All of the packs have a listed of suggested activities that will help you explore the park and have an excellent outdoor adventure.

At First Landing State Park, we are doing a trial run with "Trail Packs."  These hip packs contain a monocular, a field guide, and a magnifying glass.  We are allowing visitors to use these only on guided hikes or school field trips.  If we get a positive response, we'll be applying for grant funds to have these in all of our parks.

Call the park near you to find out if they have Park Packs and/or Explore Packs. To find a park near you, click here.

Virginia State Parks (May 22, 2016 05:37:23 PM): You are welcome to use it. The ones we offer at the park vary some by park. We also have the project where we have them to be checked out at participating libraries. They all look the same but not exactly like the one in this article. If you have more questions email me at nancy.heltman@dcr.virginia.gov.

pat pasley (May 22, 2016 05:18:17 PM): Hi! I'm putting together the newsletter for the Chesapeake Conservancy and would like to plug your Park Packs. May we use the photo of the pack and contents?
