Thanks to all of our visitors who participated in #OptOutside this year and a special thanks to those who not only made family memories but memorialized them in digital format. We had three times as many contest entries as last year and all but three of our 37 Virginia State Parks were represented.

You did not make it easy for us to select winners and we added more winners to all of the categories except the Grand Prize Winner. There were so many other great photos that are not honored here and as soon as we get them all downloaded, we will provide a link so everyone can see them all.

I did see a lot of dogs not on leashes but I also saw some great family photos, adults and children having fun, beautiful scenery, sunset and night photography and even some cool black and white photos. We had some photographers submit multiple quality photos and for the most part we selected the one we liked the best for the prize. However, we did something special for the Grand Prize because we felt the two best photos were submitted by the same photographer so we made then the Grand Prize winner.

Grand Prize - Marisa Spyker - for her two photos taken at Douthat State Park:

Cathy (December 10, 2016 12:46:08 AM): You can't win them all. You can't please all of the people all of the time. Do I detect some jealousy? Go find a safe place & suck your pacifier !!!!!

Thuy Senser (December 09, 2016 08:39:02 PM): We agreed with all of the choices, they are inspiring and all are winners. Even those didn't get selected and got to enjoy the day in the wonderful Virginia State Park system.
We'll come back again, and again.

Thank you for the work by all of the staff to make Virginia a beautiful playground.

Cheryl (December 04, 2016 08:43:14 PM): Paul, wrong assumption about pro photographers.

I shoot stunning photos and I'm not a pro. Just a shooter with a basic second hand DSLR, and a phone camera.
Just a wanna be so far.
And absolutely nothing wrong with pros doing what they do best.

The images were nice and who ever had the job of choosing what they liked at a difficult job.
Congrats to the winners.
Cheryl

Sue L. (December 03, 2016 10:17:58 PM): Beautiful photos of the most beautiful state parks ever...all Virginia! Congratulations to all who won and participated. Maybe I'll submit next year.

Paul (December 02, 2016 07:54:01 PM): Jane, most of those amazing shots were taken by professional photographers. The winning photos look like they were taken by folks who don't do this for a living - who weren't out hiking solely for the purpose of getting the perfect shot. For that reason I support the photos chosen. Congrats, Marisa!

Terry (December 01, 2016 07:46:22 PM): Congratulations to all the prize winners! I enjoyed the video - thanks for putting it together. Here's to more #OptOutside days!

Jane (December 01, 2016 03:48:56 PM): There were half a dozen photos from in this contest that were absolutely stunning that won nothing. Yet several poorly shot, boring images won prizes. I do not understand most of your choices.
