As we enjoy a waning moon, Sky Meadows State Park is offering a great opportunity to see the night skies, learn the importance of dark sky conservation, and even a chance to see a meteor.

Sky Meadows Astronomy Night is October 19, 2019

Immerse yourself in an enjoyable and educational exploration of the night sky on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Sky Meadows State Park, thanks to the Friends of Sky Meadows. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. for an evening full of activity at the convergence of the Orionid meteor shower and the 72% waning gibbous moon

The activities will kick off at 6:00 p.m. with a talk from Virginia Master Naturalists about the effects of light pollution on native wildlife, starting with a child-friendly conversation about the animals of Sky Meadows.

Following the talk, at 8:00 p.m. we will turn our attention to the Orionid meteor shower as an astronomer informs you about the Orionid phenomenon and gives guidance for how to capture meteors on film.
