An ImageEarly into her teaching career at Warren County High School in Front Royal, Virginia, Madeline MacNeil decided that being a folk singer might be a better fit for her life.  In 1972, she began her new career at Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah National Park.  When she first began performing she played the guitar as an accompaniment to her beautiful singing voice.  That changed in 1974 when Madeline met Appalachian music legend Ralph Lee Smith.  He insisted that she add the dulcimer to her music.  Not only did she take his advice and add the Mountain Dulcimer to her repertoire, but she learned to play the Hammered Dulcimer as well.  Today Madeline is a best-selling author of Mountain and Hammered Dulcimer books for Mel Bay Publications and has recorded numerous CDs through the years.

Arts centers and universities throughout the United States have played host to Madeline MacNeil in concert.  Across the Atlantic, she has performed at the O'Carolan Festival in Keadue, County Roscommon, Ireland; the Glasgow Festival of the Arts in Scotland; and for the Nonsuch Dulcimer Gathering in East Norton, Leicestershire, England. For several years she was a touring artist under the sponsorship of the Virginia Commission for the Arts.  On April 23rd, 2011 from 12 to 4:00 pm you can enjoy some of Madeline’s music and stories on the back porch of the Historic Mount Bleak House at Sky Meadows State Park.  She will also be performing at the park for the Fall Farm Festival in October and the Holiday Open House in November.
