Butterflies are often associated with the warm days of summer. Have you ever considered what happens to them during the fall?

Birds migrate in the fall. We know that Monarch butterflies migrate as well even though there are still several unanswered questions. Staunton River Battlefield State Park wants to help get some of those answers.

What are some of the questions?

Birds often use the same route through the course of their lives. Do monarch butterflies use certain pathways or do they migrate in a “less organized” pattern? How does the weather impact migration? Does migration change from year to year? These are just some of the questions we hope to help find answers to.

How to help

Staunton River Battlefield State Park, in a cooperative effort with Monarch Watch, is offering an opportunity for a volunteer experience that can help answer these questions through a Tag the Monarch program.

The volunteer taggers will help collect monarchs to be tagged to contribute to this scientific study. The volunteers will also have a chance to learn more about the life history and how to attract these butterflies to your yard.
