Last Cast of Summer
Summer may be winding down but the fishing is still hot at Virginia State Parks, and we've got a few favorite fishing holes to recommend whether it be your first cast, or last of the season.
Last cast of summer at Douthat State Park in the Allegheny Mountains
Virginia has an awesome range of great fishing, from native brook trout to huge striped bass and the good news is that Virginia State parks provide access to the best fishing holes around.
The early bird gets the worm (or you can buy your bait and tackle in one of our park stores). Think about spending a few nights in a cabin or campsite and then hit the water to reel in the big one. Need a boat? well that's okay because many parks rent boats. And plenty of parks also offer pier, dock and shoreline fishing, some even after dark.
Lit fishing pier at Kiptopeke State Park on the Eastern Shore, Chesapeake Bay
No matter the type of fishing you enjoy - stream, lake by boat, small lake kayak fishing, downriver, tidal river, or bay and ocean fishing, we've got it all at Virginia State Parks.

For more information on fishing at a particular park, select the park of interest then click “Recreation” on the left menu. Fishing licenses are required at all parks except at the Kiptopeke State Park and York River State Park piers where a fee is charged to fish. Learn about the Fish Virginia First Trail here. Be sure to follow all DGIF rules when you fish at our parks.
While you take advantage of the last cast of summer at your favorite Virginia State Park, don't worry the fish won't care, they're always hungry and ready to give that fishing pole a workout. And fortunately for us, we're open year-round.
