It's Official, We Have a State Salamander
With more than 50 species of Salamanders in Virginia, how did the Red Salamander get top billing? And why do we even have an Official State Salamander?
A group of young naturalists (students) from "Salamander Savers 4-H Club" out of Fairfax Virginia has inspired a house bill that would make the red Salamander Virginia's State Salamander. They asked for the bill and lobbied for it which even included drawing cards supporting the Red Salamander that they delivered to lawmakers.

“I was really impressed with them, they started and founded this organization known as the Salamander Savers. It’s a 4-H group, and they did their research, wanted to be involved in the process and see this through,” Del. Eileen Filler-Corn said.
The Red Salamander’s scientific name is the pseudotriton ruber. It is native to Virginia.
From the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) blog:
"Virginia has more than 40 state emblems that represent its cultural heritage and natural resources. Last week, another state emblem was signed into law; the Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber) is now Virginia’s official State Salamander. This species was selected because of its beautiful coloration, widespread distribution in the Commonwealth and its ability to raise awareness about the conservation of a group of animals whose secretive lifestyle often makes it difficult for many people to appreciate them.
This honorable designation was made possible through a collaborate effort between a group of young dedicated Salamander conservationists known as Salamander Savers, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn of Fairfax County."
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages more than 127,000 acres, so you are sure to spot Salamanders at a Virginia State Park if you look closely.
